Offerings to the Dead

Candles

One of the most common offerings to the deceased is a candle, signifying the light of the spirit and the light of God.

The child's grave above has been adorned with a broken
birthday candle. The candle was in the shape of a number 1.

Coconuts

Coconuts as grave decorations are believed to mirror the use of conch shells in the Low Country.

Notice how the coconut has been half-buried
at the foot of the headstone.

Letters, Jars, and Personal Possessions

Placing letters and pictures at the grave of a loved one is believed to be a means of communication with the deceased.

Household items and personal possessions are laid at the grave site for the spirit.
