Curriculum at the YWCA


The YWCA was one of the strongest institutions in the Harlem community. It lived up to its role by providing a full curriculum of education for those who were interested in job training. Below is a table of all of the course offerings for the YWCA trade school for the years 1904- 1945.

Secretary and Business School


typing, filing, bookkeeping, filing, telephone and switchboard operating, business English

Domestic Arts

sewing, dressmaking, millinery, French flower making, power machine operating, lamp shades and novelties, and basketry

Beauty School

the study of hair culture, hair dressing, waving, facial treatments, eyebrows and eyelashes and manicuring

Miscellaneous Courses

music appreciation, choral singing, current events, health and hygiene, "Everyday law for Women," French, Spanish, "Current Literature," public speaking, "Parliamentary Law," "Negro History," and Citizenship
