Source: Anna DeCosta Banks was dedicated to nursing, serving both the rich and poor in the city of Charleston. Anna was educated in the Charleston city schools and Hampton Institute. Banks was one of the first graduates of the Dixie Hospital at Hampton for her nurse training. She became the first Head Nurse for the Hospital and Training School for nurses in Charleston in 1898, later becoming Superintendent of Nurses. Nurse Banks served in various capacities of that institution for over thirty-two years. In addition, Anna DeCosta Banks served as visiting nurse for the Ladies Benevolent Society of Charleston for twenty-four years. In 1959 McClennan Hospital moved to a new building near MUSC and was renamed the McClennan-Banks Hospital.
