The Lincoln School of Nursing

The Lincoln School for Nurses in the Bronx originated in 1899 as part of the privately funded "Lincoln Hospital and Home," and in 1900 graduated its first class of six. In 1905 the school was registered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and in 1909 graduated its first three-year class. In 1926 the Lincoln Hospital was sold to the city of New York, but the nurses school was retained. With the proceeds of the sale, the managers built a beautifully equipped facility which boasted 239 private rooms and twenty-three baths for the nurses, an infirmary for the students which included a small hospital with two wards, and even a tennis court. The school was very well staffed with doctors from Lincoln Hospital and others and special practice teachers from the Teacher's college.
