Aubré de L. Maynard, MD

Born on the island of Barbados in 1901, Dr Maynard immigrated to New York with his family at about the age of six. He received his secondary school education at Townsend Harris Hall, the preparatory school for the College of the City of New York, and a bachelors degree from the College. He studied medicine at New York University and completed a two year internship at Harlem Hospital in 1926. After spending more than twenty years as an attending surgeon under Dr. Wright, he became director of surgery in 1952. In 1958 it was he who operated on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. after he was stabbed in the chest in the Blumstein store. After his retirement from that position in 1967, he continued to serve as a surgical consultant until 1972. A highly skilled surgeon and advocate of medical advancement for black physicians and nurses, he is remembered with fondness by those with whom he served during his long career.
