Lionel Hampton

Hear Lionel on the vibes with the Benny Goodman Orchestra

The first feature vibes jazz musician, Lionel Hampton made was recorded in 1930 on "Memories of You" with Louis Armstrong. Later, in Los Angeles, Hampton began his own band and in 1936 Benny Goodman persuaded him to join the Goodman Quartet. In 1940, Hampton formed his own big orchestra and the following year had his first big hit, "Flyin' Home." Since that time he continued to tour and became a professor of music at Howard University in 1981.
