Fraser Elementary School in Charleston, South Carolina, stands as an example of the successful integration of African-American history and culture into the year-long curriculum. Administrators and teachers make a conscious effort to provide students with positive African-American models, in the form of pictures, motivational posters, and library books.

Fraser maintains contact with an African sister school. Recently, the school established a heritage garden where plants indigenous to West Africa grow.
