We entered this project
as "cultural tourists," intending to uncover the realities of the educational
experience in Charleston and the Mississippi Delta. Informed by secondary
sources, we set out to discover how the historical African-American experience
has been taught in public schools over the past century. We soon recognized
the importance of outside institutions in shaping an individual’s historical
consciousness. The gaps that we found in terms of education and curriculum
were filled in by other segments of society such as church and family.
