These
institutions function on a private level outside the public realm. This spurred
us to consider the interaction between public and private; how these two forces
can create a functional educational dynamic unique to the southern black community.
For the purposes of this project, we define public education as comprised
of the classroom and curricular experience. We define private education as
anything that is learned or enriches. Typically, this represents an alternative
to book-learning. The act of educating privately is one of preserving individual
culture, while the act of educating publicly is one of encouraging the individual
to assimilate into the cultural "norm."
