Stepping

Stepping is a form of calculated dancing that usually includes chanting and heavy rhythmic "stomping." Stepping is prodominant in the African American organizations and has its historical roots to tribal dances performed in Africa. Greek letter organizations mainly use stepping as a ritualistic dance that is unique to that organization. They take place at parades, greeks shows, "on line", and in public places.

Many of the organizations were not aware of the significane of the counterclockwise circle that they stepped in (see image to the left). The counterclockwise circle, according to Kongo cosmology, is the sign of the life cycle, including death.

In Birmingham, you are likely to find breakdancing at the Urban X, "which is and open air event of celebration and critical examination of contemporary forms of urban artistic expression including breakdancing, graffiti and le Parkour". In Pittsburgh, you can find breakdancing downtown performed by the Steel City Breakers.
