In response to the anger, hatred, and revenge that was rampant during the Civil war years, Justus Henry Rathbone felt that the solidarity of brotherhood had dissapeared in American society. He wanted to create an organization that would resemble the brotherly love found in the old Pythagorean Brotherhood. "He believed that this old spirit could be revived and a new fraternity could be established under which men would gather under one common banner." He found this true meaning of comradeship in the story of Damon and Pythias and proposed a new organization based on the trinity of Friendship, Charity and Benevolence, one that would proclaim "Peace on Earth, Good will towad men."

Rathbone was so moved by the story of Damon and Pythias that he was determined to do all he could to teach men to follow their example. He believed that the level of friendship and brotherhood that was illustrated in this story should be the basis for his new fraternal organization.
